Economic incentives for discouraging urban sprawl in Mexico City

In Mexico, there is a huge concern about urban sprawl. From standpoints of governments, there are some difficulties with the integration between housing policy, urban land policy and planning policies in general. A research proposal submitted by Gabriela Estrada-Díaz, José Alberto Lara-Pulido and Juan Carlos Zentella-Gómez looks into this issue, and try to answer why does urban sprawl continue to spread, if even though there is land available in the inner city of Mexico. The proposal also plans to look at price differential between inner-city and outskirts’ houses, which is explained by the unrecognized externalities in the urbanization of outskirts’ land.
